Oct. li, 1861. 0BiTr.4RY Notices.—We have heretofore given notice, repeatedly, that we charge for obituary notices of un reasonable length, and for resolutions of respect; be cause that kind of reading, we have much occasion to know, is not often more agreeable to readers than to «iiiors of papers. As it generally happens, however, that after charging and paying postage on the account for warded, we never get paid, we now give notice that we will insert nothing of the sort hereafter unless accom panied by the cash. (Always excepting in the caoe of deceased volunteers, when we require no pay.) Bear in mind, therefore, that we will insert obituary notices and resolutions, not exceeding 70 words, gratis. For all over 70 words, one cent a word, which must be paid be fore the notice will be put in type. From the Charleston Courier. A LIST OF THE GENERAL OFFICERS IN THE ARMIES OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES. A Federal Deserter.—A deserter from the Federal army at Fernandina—a Jerseyman—came ! into our lines below a day or two since, and wa* forwarded to this city yesterday. He gives much interesting information concerning the enemy, , and alleges slow pay and bad food as the can've ot ! his desertion.—^acannah Repubtwan '•'■Ruom Enouifh uj> iSfairs."—It is related that a young man, hesitating as to the ohoico ot a pro I fession, applied to Daniel Web'^ter for advice ! “The legal profession is quite full, 1 am told," ; said the querist, “do you think theit* is any : chance for such a man as mysell '” ‘‘There is room enough up stairs,” was Mr. Webster’s sig nificant reply. The remark is widely applicable. In every laudable and useful avoeation, there is usuall) room enough up stairs.” The lower ^torios may ? be full; the moderate, meilim re gnides of culture . and ability may be crowded; the supply on this level may exceed the demand; and he wlio is con- tent with a ground floor life, with no earnest dlli gent effofts to rise, no resolute strivings for ex cellence and superiority, may find large occasion for doing nothing, because there is notliing to io and nothing to be had for it. Rarely, however, this is the case with the man of large attain ments and high abil'ty. Seldom is such a one “out of a place.” Society always 'hath need of him.” The upjier apartments, in whatever profes.sion or pursuit, are never over full Times may be hard—business dull—throngs in the market-place “all the day idle;” and yet it is true as ever, “there is room enough uj) stairs ” A Stump Preacher, describing the latter days, says;—“Then, my hearers, the axle ot the globe will have become so rusty that the earth will stop turning like the old weather cock on yonder barn You will be obliged to grease the winds to make^ them glide over the earth, and the lightnings ot heaven will not descend without the assistance ot a ladder.” XfliVIMBD LrLu...u.>.
